Questions to Ask Your Security Camera Installer

When it comes to security cameras, having a skilled and educated installer is just as crucial as the cameras you select to monitor your home or business. While each project is unique, there are a few questions that every property owner should ask their installer before signing a contract.

Here are four things you should ask your security camera installer - and if they don't know the answers right away, it could be time to look for a new installer.

1. How are you going to weatherproof our connections?

Your security camera system is a substantial investment for your property, and preserving the connections going to and from each of your cameras is critical to ensuring the long-term viability of your system. Make sure you understand the weatherproofing procedures used by your installer and what happens if they fail.

The IP rating of your cameras classifies the level of protection provided by the camera's housing. If your security cameras will be used indoors, you won't require cameras with a high IP rating. Cameras with higher IP ratings, on the other hand, are required to withstand extreme weather conditions.

2. What kind of hard drives do you use?

You can buy the most up-to-date high-end IP network cameras with features like Pan-Tilt-Zoom and Fisheye lenses, but if your installer is using a subpar hard disc, you may experience major performance and lifetime issues. Verify that you are aware of the type of hard disc that the installer intends to install and that they are providing you with the appropriate equipment for your job.

You must use surveillance-grade hard drives or better for surveillance recording. While there are numerous options available, ensure that your installer is using the appropriate hard drive(s) for your project to ensure the best performance and reliability.

3. What type of cable are you using?

When you see a bridge being built, you hope the construction company is using the best cables available to keep the project from collapsing later, right? The same is applicable for the network wires used by your installation. Without the proper network cables, your system may fail faster than you think.

If you're not sure what kind of cables your installer is using, chances are they're utilizing CCA or Copper-Coated Aluminum Cables. Installers use CCA cables to save money on installation, but they end up costing you more in the long term because they regularly fail network certification tests. Copper cable, rather than copper-coated alternatives, should be used by your installer.

4. Are there any required monthly fees?

How many times have you heard a sales pitch that sounded too good to be true, only to read the fine print and discover a slew of unexpected pitfalls? Before you sign on the dotted line, double-check that your system is truly yours.

Many installers will take your surveillance equipment hostage and force you to sign a long-term contract at a monthly cost. You lose access to live watching options, recordings, or both when your contract expires or you opt-out of the monthly subscription.
